Christina Baade joined the McMaster University Faculty of Humanities in 2003 as assistant professor in music and communication studies. She taught previously at Middle Tennessee State University and University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Her research interests lie in twentieth-century popular and classical music, the BBC, and the historical interactions of mass media and music. She completed her dissertation, “‘Victory Through Harmony’: The British Broadcasting Corporation and Popular Music in World War II, 1939-1945” in 2002 and working on turning it into a book. Dr. Baade has published on American klezmer and read papers on Bing Crosby, the BBC, and bandleader Ivy Benson at national and international conferences. Her honors include the JaFran Jones and International Association for the Study of Popular Music-United States Chapter awards for best graduate student papers, the French-Felton Award for Inspirational Teaching as a Teaching Assistant at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, a Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation fellowship, and a National Merit scholarship. Dr. Baade has served on the executive committee for IASPM-US, as student representative for the Society for American Music and the American Musicological Society Council, and on the steering committee for the National Feminist Graduate Students Conference.
Dr. Baade has also been active as a classical and klezmer clarinetist. She was a founding member of Yid Vicious klezmer ensemble, whose sophomore compact disc is on the Knitting Factory label, as well as Casseopeia Winds, which was a finalist at the Coleman Chamber Music Competition. Christina was a concerto competition winner at UW-Madison and Northwestern University. She has appeared with ensembles including the Madison Symphony Orchestra, the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra, and the Milwaukee Chamber Orchestra. Her teachers include Clark Brody, Greg Smith, and Linda Bartley.
